A Swan Lake, a new surrealistic interpretation of the classical ballet, has proved a great success of the Norwegian National Ballet and choreographer Alexander Ekman, whose bet was to transform the stage into a real lake. Ekman works with composer Mikael Karlsson. The show has attracted international ballet lovers, the Norwegian Radio (NRK) reported. "This is a new version that plays a role. It's about Swan Lake and time. This use of water is very new, something that people have never seen before, so striking." The first act of the drama mixes dialogue, humour and contemporary dance, set in the staging of the first production of Swan Lake in 1877. It pays homage to the classical music of Tchaikovsky and ballet dances from the original. The second act is set 137 years later and the lake, the long-awaited scene is truly spectacular, according to journalist Maren Ørstavik from the Aftenposten newspaper. The water is like another actor on stage, limits the movements of the dancers and provides a whole new mean of visual expression. "Ekman uses water not only as scenery but creates stage sets of dances together with water, plays with it, splashes, thumps; water is the protagonist of the whole scene," he wrote. It is a surreal production, a complete rewriting of the classic version. Ørstavik adds "it successfully integrates dance, music, theater, technology and nature."
